'Catch a thief online' is not the name of an online game but rather an official website produced by the Nanjing police in order to track down criminal suspects.
The website goes online on Monday and features photos of thieves taken from video surveillance footage, Beijing News reports.
"If you know the person, or you believe you have identified the criminal, you can text or call us or notify1 us by social media" stated the Nanjing police on the website.
The photos are displayed in individual wanted notices for each suspect on the website (http://zxt.jschina.com.cn/), with each bearing2 a case number. Beneath the suspect's photo, three options are available: "I know him", "He is like somebody" and "Surrender to the police".
However, concerns have been raised that the website may lead to witch-hunt style behaviour, which means mobilizing3 netizens to track down specific individuals or facts that lead to the violation4 of basic rights of the country's citizens.
Meanwhile, the police have said they have discussed with experts and confirm that the platform has legal basis.
Use of the photos depends on whether the case is a criminal one or not, according to Wang Jianwen, professor of Haihe University. It is not appropriate to put the thief's photo online if he or she is just a pilfer5.
