According to anew review of the link between personality and academicachievement, personality is a better way to predict success atschool than intelligence as it’s usually measured, by traditionalstandardized tests. Arthur Poropat, of Griffith University inAustralia, compared measurements of what psychologists call the“big five” personality traits — openness, conscientiousness¹,extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism² — to academic scores,and found that the students who were rated higher in openness andconscientiousness tended to receive better grades。

In Dr.Poropat’s research, a student’s assessment³ of their own personalityis as useful for predicting university success as intelligencerankings. However, when people who know the student well providethe personality rating, it is nearly four times more accurate forpredicting grades。

It makesintuitive sense that both conscientiousness and openness wouldresult in higher grades; it doesn’t really matter how smart you areif you can’t manage to turn your homework in on time, for one. Andanother word for openness is curiosity, another obviously necessaryfactor in learning. Still, it’s an interesting way to think aboutacademic achievement for anyone who grew up believing they did wellin school simplybecausethey were “smart。”
