A small boy and his nature¹ science teacher were having a walk in the country when it suddenly² began to rain very hard. They did³ not have their umbrella with them，and there was nowhere⁴ to hide⁵ from the rain，so they were soon very wet，and the small boy did not feel happy.

For a long time while⁶ they were walking to school through the rain，the boy was thinking⁷.Then at last he turned to the teacher and said⁸ to him，"Why does it rain，sir, it is not very nice，is it?”

"No，it is not very nice，but it is very useful，Tom，"answered the teacher，"It rains to make the fruit and the vegetables grow for us，and to make the grass grow for the cows and sheep."

Tom thought⁹ about this for a few seconds,and then he said，"Then，why does it rain on the road too,sir?”
