Researchers in Montreal say unemployment can lead to a shorter life, particularly among men.

The findings, analyzing¹ 40 years worth of data from millions of people in 15 countries published in the Journal of Social Science & Medicine, strongly suggest men are particularly affected².

"We suspect that even today, not having a job is more stressful for men than for women," said Eran Shor, a sociology professor at McGill University in Montreal.

The study found sustained unemployment raises the risk of premature³ death by 63 percent. The risk is increased 78 percent for men compared with 37 percent for women.
