Tokyo attempted to put its scandal-hit preparations for the 2020 Olympics back on track yesterday when it finally settled on a Japanese design for the new national stadium.

But the choice of a multi-tiered, part-wooden stadium nicknamed “the hamburger” on social media could ignite further trouble after architects said it bore “remarkable¹ similarities” to a blueprint² abandoned in July.

The selection of the “trees and green” themed stadium designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma sought to end months of uncertainty³. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a specially⁴ convened⁵ cabinet meeting that the chosen design was a “wonderful plan that meets criteria⁶ such as basic principles, construction period and cost”.

The 80,000-seat stadium is estimated to cost Y149bn ($1.2bn) — below the government-imposed cap of Y155bn — and is scheduled to be completed by November 2019.
