An Evening View of the Tower on River Bank

To the Tune of Plum-sweeping Wind

Zhao Shanqing

枫枯叶，

柳瘦丝，

夕阳闲画阑十二。

望晴空莹然如片纸，

一行雁一行愁字。

Withered¹ maple² leaves are whirling,

Slim willow³ twigs⁴ are swaying,

Twelve rails cast shadows on the tower in the sunset.

Gazing into the sky it’s a clean sheet of paper spread,

A flight of wild geese forms a line of characters sad.
