A Californian YouTube star has made a splash with a new take on the classic coke and Mentos stunt¹.

Taras Maksimuk, from Rocklin, has filmed himself emptying a bucket of the candy into a swimming pool full of Coca-Cola.

The Ukraine native, who goes by the name TechRax on YouTube, said he poured thousands of bottles of coke to fill the pool with 1,500 gallons of pop. 'This is something you wouldn't even see in the movies,' he said. 'Imagine just swimming in this. Wow.'

He went onto empty the bucket of Mentos into the Coca-Cola and stepped back as the liquid began to fizz. The reaction is caused by a process called nucleation, whereby the carbon dioxide in the soda is attracted to dozens of tiny pores on the surface of the Mentos, causing so much pressure that the soda erupts.

In 2006, TV show MythBusters concluded that the potassium benzoate, aspartame, and CO2 gas contained in the Diet Coke, in combination with the gelatin and gum arabic ingredients of the Mentos, all contribute to the formation of the foam³.
