A middle school teacher in Chengdu, Sichuan Province is being investigated by local education authorities for collecting cash deposits from students that she planned to dock if they got bad grades.
The policy was brought to light after a netizen posted that the teacher, surnamed Xiao, had collected a minimum of 100 yuan ($14.6) from each of her students at Fuxing Middle School at the beginning of the spring semester.
Xiao said her students had come up with the system, which would deduct1 fines from the deposits for falling grades or "wrong answers."
"It was their idea to put down cash for disciplinary purposes. And it was openly discussed with parents, who also approved," Xiao said.
"We handed in money voluntarily," said a student in the class. "The money would be returned to us eventually anyway."
County education bureau officials forced Xiao to return a total 2,660 yuan she collected from her students. The investigation2 is still underway.
