After a very brief cooling down period, the heatwave is back with vengeance1. Temperatures are expected to hit 30C in places today and the mid-30s on Friday, but it's not just people suffering. Our favourite foods and essential ingredients also struggle in extreme temperatures and this could have a huge knock-on effect. Jack2 Ward3, chief executive of the British Growers Association, told Grocer Magazine: "It's exceptionally difficult at the moment because a lot of things should've been planted in March but weren't.
Growers have warned there could be a shortage because of a high demand for leafy salads in the summer heat. And a record 18 million lettuces were sold in the first week of July, which is 40% more than at the same time last year. To keep up with demand, wholesalers and farmers have been forced to fly in supplies from abroad to meet requirements of supermarkets.
Carrots
Heat and rainfall have affected6 the growth of carrots this year and they are being harvested in smaller sizes. Average wholesale5 prices are up nearly 55% as a result, according to the Grocer magazine. Farmer Rodger Hobson believes the carrot shortage could last until June 2019 and force supermarkets to import the vegetable from abroad. Mr Hobson, chairman of the British Carrot Growers Association, said: "We normally plant in March and April because the longer they are in the ground, the more they grow."
"But because of the snow we didn't get them planted until the middle of May and it's not just the water shortage - it's also the temperatures. The optimum is 16C to 19C. It's 25C and the carrots just wilt7."
Onions
An "unprecedented8" onion shortage is on the cards, according to Tim Elcombe, chairman of British Onions. He said 2018 is "the worst year in our history." Mr Ward said: "Volumes are down for all veg, but the veg still in the ground is the worst affected. We are seeing a 20-25% lower yield."
