cool as a cucumber

一五三一年，英国著名学者埃利奥特（Thomas Elyot）在《健康之堡垒》（The Castle of Health）中说，吃黄瓜可以产生一种“寒冷黏稠的体液”（coldand thick humour）。

其实，在热天，黄瓜中心部分的温度比周围气温要低很多，cool as a cucumber这成语在英国已经流传了几百年，意思是“冷静沉着”。
