Mount Everest is the highest mountain above sea level, with an elevation¹ of 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7 feet). Located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas, it straddles the border between Nepal (Sagarmatha Zone) and Tibet (China). First summited by Sir Edmund Hillary (NZ) and Tenzing Norgay (Nepal) in 1953, it is a challenging climb due to extreme weather, altitude sickness, and the "Death Zone" above 8,000 meters.
