The Great Barrier Reef, located off the coast of Queensland, Australia, is the world's largest coral reef system. Stretching over 2,300 kilometers (1,400 miles) and covering an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometers, it is visible from space. Comprising over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands, it supports unparalleled marine¹ biodiversity, including 1,500 fish species, 400 coral species, and endangered species like the green sea turtle and dugong.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, the reef faces threats from climate change, ocean acidification, and human activities. Conservation efforts, such as the Reef 2050 Plan, aim to protect this natural wonder.
