A wildfire that broke out last week in Yamanashi Prefecture, west of Tokyo, is spreading and has scorched1 more than 160 hectares of mountain forest.
The blaze started on Thursday on Ougiyama, a mountain which straddles the cities of Uenohara and Otsuki.
The fire is extending westward2, and has been confirmed to be burning in a mountainous area of Otsuki. Fire officials said it has charred3 about 162 hectares.
Firefighters and others continued to combat the blaze on Tuesday using helicopters, water hoses and backpack water tanks. But the fire has not been contained.
Officials said flames were about 350 meters away from some residential4 areas in Otsuki, but chances that they will spread to houses are considered low.
The two cities have issued a dry-air advisory5 since Monday, and with little rain forecast in and around the area for the coming week, the wildfire is showing no signs of being extinguished.
