Northeast China's Heilongjiang province has set its provincial1 highway toll2-free dates starting from the Chinese Lunar New Year's Eve (January 30) and continuing throughout this year's Spring Festival, according to a report in the Beijing Times.
A number of provinces have announced that their highways will not be free to use on New Year's Eve as the day is not an official public holiday.
China approved a plan to waive3 toll fees for vehicles during four important national holidays including Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor4 Day and the National Day holiday in 2012.
The move gained widespread support as it helped in prompting more people heading home for family reunions to use their car instead of the train. Thus, the move lightened the load for rail transportation during annual travel peaks.
The 2014 Spring Festival falls on January 31 and will last until February 6.
