With how sad steps, O moon, thou climb’st the skies!

How silently, and with how wan¹ a face!

What! may it be that even in heavenly place

That busy archer² his sharp arrows tries?

Sure, if that long-with-love-acquainted eyes

Can judge of love, thou feel’st a lover’s case：

I read it in thy looks, ---thy languished³ grace

To me, that feel the like, thy state descries⁴．

Then, even of fellowship, O moon, tell me,

Is constant love deemed there but want of wit?

Are beauties there as proud as here they be?

Do they above love to be loved, and yet

Those lovers scorn whom that love doth possess?

Do they call virtue⁵ there ungratefulness?

多么悲哀的脚步啊，月亮，你爬上天空

一张苍白的脸颊，多么寂寞。

莫非是那忙碌的“神

在天上玩弄着他的弓箭？

如果相思瞒不过久已苦于相思的眼睛，

那么我敢说，你也处在恋爱的心情，

你那憔悴的美丽让我明白了一切——

我们在深深爱着。

同在相思中的月亮啊，你能告诉我吗，

矢志的爱情在天界是否被看作不智？

那里的女子是否也这般傲慢？

是否喜欢被爱，而又

轻蔑真爱着她的人？

在天界，是否负心被称作美德？
