A college student was sentenced to jail terms of ten years and six months for hunting 12 endangered birds during his summer vacation, according to a local court in Zhengzhou on Wednesday.

The court of Huixian county in central China's Henan Province heard that Yan, born in 1994, was college student in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan. He caught 12 Eurasian hobbies on July 14 last year with a friend surnamed Wang. One of the birds died while another escaped. The remaining ten were sold via the internet for more than 1,000 yuan (about 156.3 U.S. dollars).

位于中国中部的河南省辉县市法院获知，闫某出生于1994年，是河南省会郑州的一名在校大学生，其于7月14日与朋友王某一起捕捉了12只燕隼。其中一只小鸟死亡，一只逃跑。剩下10只通过网络售卖，售得共1000多元（约156.3美元）。

The pair caught two more Eurasian hobbies on July 27, as well as two other falcons¹, before they were put into custody² by the forestry³ police bureau of Huixian county.Yan also illegally bought a crested⁴ goshawk. Crested goshawk and Eurasian hobby are both Class-B protected animals in China.

两人于7月27日又捕捉了两只燕隼和两只猎鹰，之后两人被辉县市森林公安局拘留。闫某曾非法购买过一只凤头鹰。在中国，凤头鹰和燕隼都属于国家二级保护动物。

The court fined Yan 5,000 yuan for illegally hunting endangered wild animals and another 5,000 yuan for trading such animals, and sentenced him to ten and a half years imprisonment⁵. They fined Wang 5,000 yuan, and sentenced him to jail terms of ten years for poaching.

闫某因非法捕狩濒危野生动物，法院对其处以5000元罚款，又因闫某涉嫌交易此类动物，对其额外处以5000元罚款，并判处10年半有期徒刑。王某因非法狩猎被处以5000元罚款，并被判处10年有期徒刑。

Both men appealed after the ruling, but the Intermediate People's Court of Xinxiang city upheld the verdict of Huixian court, citing "gross violation⁶" in the case.

二人在判决之后都提起上诉，但新乡市中级人民法院支持辉县市法院的判决，认为此案件属于“情节严重”，不算重判。
