有一次甘地听到一个印度教徒跟他说：“我要下地狱了!因为有个回教徒杀了我的小孩，所以我也杀了一个回教徒。”

他问说：“现在我该怎么办?我一定会下地狱的。”

甘地对他说：“我知道一条出地狱的路。你去认养一个孤儿，让他变成回教徒，弥补你以前所做的事。也许你还是会下地狱，但至少良心没有愧疚，你知道自己已经尽力去弥补了，而且还让别人快乐，这样至少你去地狱时会快快乐乐地去。”
