Yue Fu

A Collection of Yue Fu Poetry was compiled during the Song Dynasty by Guo Maoqian whose life remains¹ unknown. Yue fu was originally the official bureau in charge of music. It was set up during the reign² of emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty. As a permanent governmental institution of the Han, Wei, the Western and Eastern Jin dynasties, it was responsible for compling music books, anthologizing songs and ballads³ and training musicians. All the songs which had been set to music by this institution were referred to as Yue Fu poetry. Collection of Yue Fu Poetry contains not only the Yue Fu poetry from the Han Dynasty to the Five Dynasties Period but also the ballads from the pre-Qin period to the last phase of the Tang Dynasty. In addition, it also contains the simulated works of later generations. The poems in the collection are divided into twelve categories which are grouped into 100 volumes. It is the most comprehensive anthology of the Yue Fu poetry.
