America's bankers are backing the Democrats1 in record numbers as they fret2 over the unpredictability of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump3.
Campaign donation receipts show almost 5,200 employees from the top six US banks made a total of $1.1m in personal donations to the campaigns of either Democratic nominee4 Hillary Clinton or her party rival Bernie Sanders. Just 26 employees of the six banks made donations to the Trump campaign; the tally5 was just over $7,000.
The billionaire has at least won over some hedge funds, enticing6 the likes of John Paulson to a $50,000 a head fundraiser in New York last month. But it is a different story with mainstream7 banks.
Senior bankers would not speak on the topic publicly but privately8 expressed concerns about the Republican candidate.
"We're in uncharted territory," said one senior banking9 official in Washington. "I have no earthly idea what Trump would do, and I can't find anyone who is advising Trump on banking policy, here in DC, in New York, in Florida?.?.?."
Most candidates at this stage of a presidential race would have amassed10 an identifiable policy advisory11 team, the banker pointed12 out. "Mr Trump does not appear to have the same apparatus13. His advisers14 may remain the newspapers and the mirror, we really don't know."
In contrast, Mrs Clinton's campaign has hired recognised policy experts, including economics adviser15 Gary Gensler, the former chairman of the US Commodity Futures16 Trading Commission. She has also published detailed17 policies on financial reform, including a pledge to crack down on excessive pay and do more to regulate the "shadow banking" industry.
One banker said Mrs Clinton had been forced by a close Democratic primary to make comments that were more "anti-bank" than her actual policies would be. "You campaign in poetry and govern in prose," this person said.
Mr Trump has made a handful of comments which some observers have criticised as contradictory18 and vague. "He doesn't seem to have prioritised financial reform," said one banker, adding that the comments the property tycoon19 has made are "top-line statements not underpinned20 by policy work".
Others disagree. Ryan Morfin, a banker with New York boutique Maroon21 Capital, is among the Wall Street minority that has donated to the Trump campaign. He said he was not worried about the absence of hard policies outlined by Mr Trump.
"Obama had little to no experience. If anything Trump has more real world experience to understand the implications of bad policy and over regulation," Mr Morfin said.
