New home transactions in 50 Chinese cities declined 18% year-on-year in 2017 amid tough government measures to rein¹ in speculation², a survey showed.

Transaction volume of new commercial residential³ housing decreased for the 10th consecutive⁴ month in December 2017, which was down 13% year-on-year to 27.37 million sq m, according to statistics compiled by E-house China R&D Institute.

易居房地产研究院编纂的统计数据显示，2017年12月，新建商品住宅成交量同比下降13%至2737万平方米，连续10个月下跌。

Among major Chinese cities, new home transactions in Beijing and Shanghai slumped⁵ 38% and 28% in December, respectively, compared with the same period in 2016.

在国内大城市中，北京和上海12月的新建住宅成交量较2016年同期分别大幅下跌了38%和28%。

"This has reflected a cooling trend in the market," said Lai Qin, researcher with the institute.

Lai said local governments are expected to hold property policies stable and consistent, which could lead to a further decline in home transactions in January.
