Zhejiang University is a state key university with a long history and under the direct administration of China's Ministry¹ of Education. Qiushi Academy，the predecessor² of Zhejiang University，was founded in 1897 and is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning ever established in China. Reputed as“the East Cambridge" in history，it has always been ranked among the few top universities in China in terms of its comprehensive academic strength showed in teaching，research and social service. 1928 Renamed National Chekiang(Zhejiang University) University.

浙江大学是一所具有一悠久历史、教育部直属的全国重点大学，前身求是书院成立于1897年，为中国人自己创办最早的高等学府之一。被誉为“东方剑桥”的浙江大学一直是中国为数不多、综合学术实力位于前列的著名大学。1928年改名为国立浙江大学。

In September 1998，a new Zhejiang University was established on the basis of the amalgamation³ of the four former individual universities，namely Zhejiang University，Hangzhou University，Zhejiang Agricultural Universify and Zhejiang Medical University，which were ail⁴ located in the garden city of Hangzhou. After more than one hundred years of construction and development,Zhejiang University has become a national first-rate and world-renowned，research-oriented comprehensive university with solid foundation，strong potentials and its own distinctive⁵ features. It is also one of the first group of universities in national“Project 211”and“Project 985”.

1998年9月，在杭的四所学校，即浙江大学、杭州大学、浙江农业大学、浙江医科大学重新合并，组建为今日的浙江大学。经过100多年的建设与发展，学校已成为一所基础坚实、实力雄厚，特色鲜明，居于国内一流水平，在国际上有较大影响的研究型、综合型大学，是首批进人国家“211工程”和“985计划“建设的若干所重点大学之一。

Zhejiang University is located in Hangzhou City of Zhejiang Province，a Chinese well-known historical and cultural city，and endowed with a pleasant climate，picturesque surroundings and a favorable academic atmosphere. Zhejiang University is an ideal place for teaching，research，and learning. With six campuses，namely Yuquan，Xixi，Huajiachi，Hubin，Zhijiang，and Zijin'gang，the university now occupies a total area of 533 hectares and a floor space of over 2 000 000 square meters.

学校位于中国历史文化名城—浙江省杭州市。校园依山傍水，环境幽雅，花木繁茂，碧草如茵，景色宜人，是读书治学的理想园地。学校设玉泉、西溪、华家池、湖滨、之江、紫金港等6个校区，占地面积5.33平方公里，校舍总建筑面积200余万平方米。

With a total space of 83 000 square meters，the university library has a collection of more than 6 260 000 volumes. In addition，the university has 6 affiliated⁶ hospitals of 5459 beds in total.

学校图书馆总建筑面积8.3万余平方米，总藏书量626万余册。此外，学校拥有附属医院6家，总床位数5459张。

The fields of study of the new Zhejiang University cover eleven branches of learning，namely philosophy, economics，law, education，literature，history，science，engineering，agriculture，medicine and management.The university now has 115 specialties⁷ for undergraduate studies，and it is entitled to confer master's degrees in 312 programs of the second level，doctoral degrees in 41 programs ir,the first level，doctoral degrees in 237 programs in the second level and 39 postdoctor research stations. Under its administration there are 13 National Key Laboratories，2 National Engineering Research Centers，3 National Engineering Technology Centers，3 National Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences. Besides，it has set up 24 National key specialties.

浙江大学的学科涵盖哲学、经济学、法学、教育学、文学、历史学、理学、工学、农学、医学、管理学等十一大门类。学校现有115个本科专业，二级学科硕士学位授权点312个，一级学科博士学位授权点41个，二级学科博士学位授权点237个，39个博士后流动站。学校现有国家重点(专业)实验室13个，国家工程研究中心2个，国家技术中心2个，国家人文社科重点研究基地3个。此外，还有国家重点学科24个。

At present，the total number of full time students has reached over 44 000 including more than 24 900 undergraduates，over 11 000 postgraduates⁸ working for master's degrees and over 6 000 Ph. D. candidates and over 1200 overseas students. There are also nearly 37 000 students taking courses in degree and nondegree programs in adult education.

全校有全日制在校学生44 000余人，其中本科生24 900余人，硕士研究生11 000余人，博士研究生6 000余人，外国留学生1200余人。另有攻读专业研究生学位及非学位等成人教育生37 000余人。

Among its 8400 staff members and workers，there are 13 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences，9 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering，over 1100 full professors and over 2400 associate professors.

学校师资力量雄厚，现有教职工8400余人，其中中国科学院院士13人，中国工程院院士9人;教授及其他正高职人员1100余人，副教授及其他副高职人员2400余人。
