The annual Oktoberfest, one of the largest folk festivals in the world, begins Saturday in Munich, Germany.

The 190th edition of the event will officially be opened at noon by Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter, who will tap the first barrel of beer on the Theresienwiese festival grounds.

For 16 days, until 5 October, visitors can enjoy various festivities in beer tents, amusement rides, and a wide range of entertainment. Many attendees opt¹ for traditional Bavarian attire², such as dirndls and lederhosen.

The festival typically draws around six million visitors and includes a grand parade and numerous side events that add to its lively atmosphere.

This year’s opening weekend is expected to enjoy perfect weather, with temperatures in Munich reaching up to 30 °C.

Locally known as Wiesn, Oktoberfest calls itself the “largest folk festival in the world,” a claim bolstered³ by its scale. Last year, an estimated seven million litres of beer were served.

While most of the attendees are Germans, the event is increasingly attracting international visitors.
