Ouyang Xiu (1007–1072) was one of the greatest polymaths of the Song Dynasty—a master poet, essayist, historian, and statesman. He played a pivotal role in the "Ancient Prose Movement," advocating for a return to the clear, simple, and expressive¹ prose style of the pre-Tang era. As a historian, he co-authored the "New History of the Tang Dynasty" (Xin Tangshu) and personally completed the "New History of the Five Dynasties" (Xin Wudaishi), setting new standards for Chinese historiography with his critical approach. His prose masterpiece, "Record of the Pavilion of the Old Drunkard" (Zuiwengting Ji), is one of the most famous essays in Chinese literature, blending lyrical descriptions of nature with a humble², self-mocking portrayal³ of an aging official who finds joy in wine, friendship, and the beauty of the mountains and streams. As a poet, he wrote in various forms, including ci (lyric poems) and shi (regulated verse), known for their freshness and emotional depth. Ouyang Xiu also served as an influential⁴ statesman, sponsoring younger talents such as Su Shi and Wang Anshi, though later disagreeing with Wang's radical⁵ reforms. Despite facing exile and political hardships, Ouyang remained dedicated⁶ to his ideals of integrity and scholarship.
