Meng Haoran (689–740) was a prominent poet of the Tang Dynasty, widely regarded as a pioneer of the "pastoral and landscape" poetry school. Unlike many of his contemporaries who pursued official careers, Meng spent most of his life in seclusion¹, living in his hometown near the Xiang River, where he devoted² himself to poetry, nature, and friendship. Famous works such as "Spring Morning" and "Passing the Night at Jiande River" capture fleeting⁶ moments of quiet beauty—the sound of birds after rain, a lonely boat on the river, the moon rising over the mountains. "Spring Morning" is especially beloved for its childlike wonder and gentle melancholy⁷， asking "How many blossoms have fallen?" after a night of wind and rain. Meng Haoran was a close friend of the great poet Wang Wei, and together they defined the pastoral landscape genre⁸. Though Meng never held high office, his poetic⁹ talent was widely recognized. During his lifetime, he was visited by many admirers, including the famous poet Li Bai, who wrote a tribute poem praising Meng's lofty character and recluse¹⁰ spirit.
