I placed a jar in Tennessee,

And round it was, upon a hill,

It made the slovenly² wilderness³

Surround that hill.

我把一只圆形的坛子

放在田纳西的山顶。

围向山峰。

The wilderness rose up to it,

And sprawled⁴ around, no longer wild,

The jar was round upon the ground

And tall and of a port in air.

荒野向坛子涌起，

It took dominion⁵ everywhere,

The jar was gray and bere,

It did not give of bird or bush,

Like nothing else in Tennessee.
