Military commander with the French forces in the American Revolutionary War, Armand Lauzun was a French peer who supported the French Revolution. In 1793, he was sent to Vendee, a coastal¹ region in France, to help suppress a Royalist insurgency² there. He gained several successes, but after he submitted his resignation, he was sent to the guillotine by the bloodthirsty French Revolutionary Committee because of his "undue³ leniency⁴ to the insurgents⁵".

When the executioner came to fetch Lauzun in his cell, he was found to be drinking wine and eating oysters⁶. "Allow me to finish, citizen, and take a glass of this wine," Lauzun told the executioner. "In your profession you must need courage."
