Military commander with the French forces in the American Revolutionary War, Armand Lauzun was a French peer who supported the French Revolution. In 1793, he was sent to Vendee, a coastal1 region in France, to help suppress a Royalist insurgency2 there. He gained several successes, but after he submitted his resignation, he was sent to the guillotine by the bloodthirsty French Revolutionary Committee because of his "undue3 leniency4 to the insurgents5".
When the executioner came to fetch Lauzun in his cell, he was found to be drinking wine and eating oysters6. "Allow me to finish, citizen, and take a glass of this wine," Lauzun told the executioner. "In your profession you must need courage."
