China's three major telecom carriers announced that they will scrap1 charges for domestic long-distance calls and roaming starting Oct 1, following Premier2 Li Keqiang's promise in a government work report.
我国三大电信运营商日前宣布,将自10月1日起取消国内长途话费和漫游费。此前,国务院总理李克强在政府工作报告中曾作出相关承诺。
The three carriers are China Mobile Communications Corp, China United Network Communications Group Co and China Telecommunications Corp.

Li Yue, the CEO of China Mobile, said his company will push forward with the scrapping3 of domestic long-distance and roaming charges, although such fees account for 8 to 10 percent of its total revenue.

"This move is a challenge for the company," said Li. However, it will also encourage China Mobile to enhance management efficiency and reduce its operating costs.

The move will push telecom carriers to seek new sources of business growth, including cloud computing4 and big data.
