A 500-year-old painting of Christ believed to have been painted by Leonardo da Vinci has been sold in New York for a record 450 million dollars.

The painting is known as Salvator Mundi. It is the highest auction¹ price for any work of art and brought cheers and applause at the packed auction room.

Bidding began at 100 million dollars and the final bid for the work was 400 million dollars, with fees bringing the full price up to 450.3 million dollars. The unidentified buyer was involved in a bidding contest, via telephone, that lasted nearly 20 minutes.

Leonardo da Vinci died in 1519. "Salvator Mundi" is just one of 16 known surviving paintings from the master Renaissance² artist. It was only certified³ an original Da Vinci in 2011.

Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev bought the painting in 2013 for 127.5 million dollars.
