In a break from tradition, BuzzFeed UK won the news website award on Tuesday night, becoming the first digital-only media group to be so honoured after a year that saw the organisation publish a groundbreaking series on mysterious deaths of Russian nationals in Britain — works that have moved centre stage in this week’s international row over the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy in Salisbury.
The Sunday Times won five awards, including scoop6 of the year, for revelations that the police had found porn on the parliamentary computer of the UK’s first secretary of state, Damian Green, a scandal that ultimately led to him being fired from the cabinet. Mr Garrahan’s award-winning work included one of the most important stories published during last year’s unfolding Harvey Weinstein scandal, which detailed7 how the disgraced Hollywood mogul silenced victims of alleged8 sexual assault through the use of non-disclosure agreements.
Ms Clark’s year was topped off by an in-depth look at how the energy industry had reached a tipping point, with renewables becoming an inexorably more central part of the global energy mix.
